Why you need more than one water filter

If you’re just using a single carbon or ceramic-type filter to clean your drinking water then it’s only going to be effective for a short time.  These filters are designed to remove chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides and disinfection byproducts as well as bacterial contaminants like Giardia and Cryptosporidium.   They get blocked up pretty quickly by sediment in the water and can’t absorb the chemicals or remove the bacteria once they’re blocked.   Most people only replace these filters 12 monthly.  What they don’t realise is, a couple of months after having the filter changed, they might as well be drinking straight tap water.  Even though the chlorine taste isn’t as obvious as before, the single filter can’t possibly do its job and taste is not an indicator of water purity.

A dual filter system is therefore the way to go if you want water that tastes good and is safe for your family.  However, if there is fluoride in the water and/or heavy metals (toxic metals come with fluoridating chemicals), you’ll need a multi-stage Reverse Osmosis filtration system to ensure safe drinking water.  These systems can be 3-stage, 4-stage and even 7-stage and range from $239 to $625 in price (at Gwarehouse)

The larger 7-stage system is designed for those who are particularly sensitive or just fussy about their water quality.
