Fluoride Action Network warns Hastings Council Administrator at Council Meeting
At the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting last night, Caree Alexander presented her case for a community poll on water fluoridation to be run in conjunction with Council elections in September. More than 100 people turned up in support and clapped and cheered loudly when Caree held up the 1000+ petitions collected in less than two weeks. Jenny Smith also addressed Council on her own health issues as well as on behalf of other people in the community with serious health issues which may be made worse by consuming fluoridated water. Community Information Meeting Thursday 16th Feb 5.30pm Port City Bowling Club
Find out what's happening with Water Fluoridation in the Hastings region. MPs, representatives from Council and NSW Department of Health are invited to attend to give their side of the story. Other issues covered include how to protect yourself and your family from fluoride, potential legal action and community poll update. Everyone is welcome.
Urgent - We need petitions back even sooner
Please try to get the petitions for the community poll back in time for us to present them to council at their next meeting, this Wed 15th Feb. This is very important as we now have information that Council has every right to hold a poll in conjunction with the September elections should it choose to do so. The NSW Department of Health cannot stop this. We are definitely pushing ahead with our original plan to collect as many signatures as possible. I’ve attached a new petition with the revised date. If you have petition forms signed and can't get them back in time, give me a call on 65812411 and I'll collect them.
Council Candidates agree No Fluoride
Two council candidates have already released Media Statements on Water Fluoridation showing support for a community poll on fluoridation. Both are concerned about the undemocratic manner in which we are being treated by Council and NSW Health. Read their statements here.....
Mr Administrator - what have you done?
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council were kind enough to give the community two whole weeks' notice of the date of commencement for water fluoridation. The council website now has a special page, dedicated to fluoridation:
Fluoridation of the Port Macquarie-Hastings District Water Supply
NSW Ministry of Health has approved Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's fluoride dosing plant and has instructed Council to commence dosing fluoride into the water supply system.
As a result, Council will commence fluoridation on Tuesday, 21st February 2012.
This will immediately provide fluoridated water to the reticulated water supplies in the Wauchope, Beechwood, Rawdon Island, Sancrox and Thrumster areas. Read more here....
Council changes its tune - why am I not surprised?
Response to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's media release on fluoridation petition
Local members of Fluoride Action Network Australia are disappointed by Neil Porter’s refusal to consider conducting a community poll on water fluoridation despite his earlier support for the idea.
Spokesperson for the group and retired dentist, Caree Alexander said that a letter from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in December 2011 specifically addressed the question of a poll on fluoridation. She said that the Council Administrator advised that a poll could be run in conjunction with the Council elections in September if a petition with more than 1000 signatures was submitted at least three months prior to the election date.
“Clearly the Health Department is behind this sudden change of heart by Council,” said Dr Alexander who confirmed that her group would be proceeding with a petition to Council despite pressure from the Health Department.
"In legal terms, the addition of fluoride, incidentally sourced as a waste by-product of fertiliser manufacture, remains a question for council and its community to decide," Dr Alexander said.
"There is a legal precedent preventing the activity, and the Health Department has no authority to force council down this path.
"The petition will go ahead. I urge all residents who believe fluoridation should not be forced on people, to sign the petition calling for a community poll."
Council says YES to community poll on Water Fluoridation
The community could have a chance to have their say on the controversial issue of water fluoridation at the local government elections in September.
Local members of the Fluoride Action Network Australia are delighted that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has responded positively to a request for a community poll on the issue.
Caree Alexander, retired dentist and local spokesperson for the group, said council had advised that a poll would be held if more than 1000 local residents petitioned council no later than three months prior to the election. Read the rest of the Media Release here...

Australian Dentists Quoted in NYC Article on Fluoridation
Prominent Dentists Say NYC's Fluoridated Water is Risky
Dentist Caree Alexander, a former Navy practitioner, then a private practice dentist for 20 years, says fluoridation is "totally ineffective and actually damaging as well."(5)
Dr. Alexander says, "When I graduated from University, we weren't given any information about where [fluoride] came from. We all assumed it was [pharmaceutical-grade] calcium fluoride."
Dr. Andrew Harms, former President, Australian Dental Association, who once supported fluoridation, says, "I deeply regret this ... when I did read the science about 10 years ago, I started to get serious concerns."
Dr. Harms says, "To my amazement, when I tried to raise the issue with the [Australian] Dental Association, whom I thought were interested in the science and ... integrity, there was no interest. In fact there was a lot of pressure against me to say anything at all. There was a great concern about upsetting our principle sponsors, the toothpaste manufacturers, who heavily compromise our University," says Harms in a video documentary, Firewater.
Still No Ruling on Rous Water Case
Halfway through October and the judge still hasn't delivered a decision on the Oshlack V Rous Water / Ballina Council case. The good news for the Hastings region is that, even though the fluoridation plant is ready-to-go, our sensible administrator, Neil Porter, is holding off on adding the poison.
Fluoridation Delay related to Court Case?
According to PMH administrator, Neil Porter, fluoridation will not commence until "late 2011". Council is fully aware of the Oshlack v Rous Water / Ballina Council case currently underway. They are also aware that they may need to undertake a costly Environmental Impact Study prior to starting fluoridation, thanks toJustice Biscoe's earlier ruling:
Judge Biscoe ruled in Oshalck's favour that the Code of Practice 2002, EP&A Act needs to be considered along with the Fluoridation Act 1957, and the fullest impact (Part 5, Section 111) on human health and the environment are relevant.
What’s happening at Rosewood?
Although we’ve been told to expect fluoride in our water early June, it looks like the plant still isn’t ready for commissioning. According to my source, it probably won’t be ready until the end of July. This is good news, any delay is welcomed as we await the outcome of the Rous Water/Ballina Council Vs Al Oshlack case, scheduled for hearing in the Land and Environment Court June 20-24.
What’s happening in Ballina?
Rous Water and Ballina Council made the decision NOT to withdraw their defence of water fluoridation and have decided to proceed with the court case.
If they were to withdraw their defence, they would have to undertake a costly Environmental Impact Study in order to abide by Justice Biscoe’s recent ruling: Judge Biscoe has ruled in Al Oshalcks favour that the Code of Practice 2002, EP&A Act needs to be considered along with the Fluoridation Act 1957, and the fullest impact (Part 5, Section 111) on human health and the environment are relevant.
The Rous Water/Ballina Council’s legal team must have been assured of payment.....no doubt by NSW Health, while Al Oshlack and his lonely barrister, James Johnson must rely on severely limited finances.
This will be the first time in Australia that our antiquated and barbaric fluoridation legislation will be legally challenged on the grounds of environmental safety, including health risks of fluoride to human health.
Professor Paul Connett, expert will be returning to Australia as a key expert witness for the case.
Fluoridation will be put on trial in June 2011
In a landmark ruling by the Land & Environment Court against Rous Water - the regional water supply authority providing water to the Council areas of Lismore (excluding Nimbin), Ballina (excluding Wardell), Byron (excluding Mullumbimby) and Richmond Valley - Justice Peter Biscoe found that the water authority should have complied with provisions in the Environmental Planning Assessment and examined the impact on human health and the environment before voting in April last year to fluoridate the region's water.

Write to the new Council Administrator Now
This is the perfect opportunity to get the new Administrator's attention regarding our opposition to water fluoridation. Write to Mr Neil Porter immediately, requesting that all plans to commission and operate the fluoridation plant be halted pending the outcome of Oshlack Vs Rous Water & Ballina Council hearing in June.
Fluoride Plans washed out
WET weather has pushed back the expected start date of fluoridated water in the Hastings.
Fluoride now is expected to be added to the Hastings’ water supply from late June, subject to final plant testing, commissioning and NSW Health approval.
The start date has been pushed back a month because of delays to the associated sewer works caused by wet weather. Water fluoridation has long stirred controversy in the Hastings.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's position on Water Fluoridation
"....the fluoride debate was conducted many years ago and after extensive research of scientific evidence it was accepted that fluoride in domestic water in the recommended quantities is beneficial. Council accepts this position," and published it in the Port News last year. The article is headed "Fluoride debate is finished".

What's happening at the "Plant"?
The Port Macquarie-Hastings fluoridation plant at Rosewood has been built but word is that it won't be ready for fluoride for another couple of months. Apparently they've had some "plumbing" problems. That doesn't sound good does it!
Mid-Coast Telemetry, the local company awarded the job of installing the fluoride dosing, monitoring and testing equipment have not yet installed their equipment and so the new guesstimate for starting fluoridation is looking like "some time in May".
What are we doing about it?
Submitting nearly 1000 No Contract / Non Consent forms to council at the next council meeting - Wed 16th Feb 5pm at Port Macquarie council chambers. (Download forms below)
Informing people that they could be drinking fluoridated water weeks before council actually commissions the fluoridation plant. The dosing equipment has to be trialled and tested before the plant is officially operating, which could result in quite high levels of fluoridation chemicals. Everyone should be aware of this, in particular those with babies, pregnant women, dialysis patients or chemical sensitive people in their families.
Hosting Professor Paul Connett, fluoride researcher, toxic waste expert and environmental chemist who will be speaking at Port Panthers on Friday 18th Feb at 7.30pm. More details here.....
